Virus & malware removal in Manhattan (UES)

This is shop work, not a blog tutorial.

You bring the machine. We figure out what is wrong before we start removing things. That usually covers:

  • Virus or malware that slows the PC or breaks security tools
  • Spyware and unwanted monitoring software
  • Adware, fake alerts, and browser hijackers (pop-ups, redirects)
  • Trojan leftovers and stubborn startup junk
  • Mac adware, unwanted profiles, and hijacked browsers
  • Ransomware and locked-file cases (honest triage below)

Personal machines, home offices, and a single infected workstation are the usual walk-ins. If a medical or small office keeps getting hit, see the short Practice IT note under Related help.

Upper East Side computer shop since 2004, on East 82nd.

Signs you actually need virus removal

One or two sudden symptoms is enough to get checked.

  • Constant pop-ups, fake “virus found” alerts, or pages you did not open
  • Browser homepage, search, or new-tab pages changed without you
  • Redirects when you type a normal site
  • Sudden slowness after the machine used to be fine
  • Programs you do not recognize
  • Antivirus or firewall turned off and you did not touch them
  • Strange outbound email from your accounts
  • A ransom note, locked files, or a countdown screen
  • Remote-access tools you never installed

Mild case? A reputable free scan can be enough when the only complaint is “a little slow” and the machine still works. Come in when pop-ups or redirects will not stop, security tools are disabled, you see a ransom message, accounts look stolen, or the PC is too unstable to scan. Until then, skip banking and password entry on that machine.

When it might not be a virus

A failing hard drive can freeze, corrupt files, and throw errors that feel like an infection. Dust and heat can make a laptop crawl. A bad update can break startups. Those need repair or recovery, not another antivirus pass.

If diagnosis points that way, we steer you to same-day computer repair or data recovery.

What we do in the shop (not a DIY tutorial)

Diagnosis first

We identify the problem class: malware, adware or hijacker, ransomware, remote-access leftover, or hardware mimicking a virus. That step decides cleanup, recovery, or hardware repair.

You get a plain-English read before we commit to a path.

Cleanup without a reckless wipe

Cleanup targets the infection and browser junk first, and leaves your personal files alone when we can. For most infections we remove the malware, spyware, adware, and browser hijackers, clean persistence points (startup items, extensions, unwanted profiles), and restore a usable browser and security stack. We do not lead with “reformat everything” when a targeted cleanup will do. If ransomware, corruption, or a failing drive puts files at risk, we say so and point to data recovery instead of a wipe.

If passwords or banking may have been exposed, we tell you what to rotate after cleanup.

Aftercare

Updates, what to change if credentials were at risk, and when to come back if something still feels off. Stubborn reinfection on the same network often means a password, email, or shared-drive problem — not a second spray of antivirus.

Mac and Windows

Windows sees the broader mix: classic viruses, Trojans, ransomware, spyware, and adware.

Macs get classic Windows-style viruses less often. They still get adware, browser hijackers, unwanted profiles, and junk that turns Safari or Chrome into a pop-up machine. We clean both. Walk-in for either.

Ransomware and “locked files”

Ransomware is not the same job as clearing pop-ups.

Some strains have known decryptors. Many do not. Paying a ransom is your call and not something we pitch. We diagnose the case, help keep other machines from repeating the hit, and focus on the files you still need.

If the files matter more than the operating system, start with data recovery. Backups change the outcome more than any single cleanup trick. We will say so plainly.

What a visit looks like (UES)

Address: 351 East 82nd Street, New York, NY (Upper East Side) Phone: 212-249-4091

Walk in with the computer when you can. Call first if the machine will not boot, you think it is ransomware, or you need to know what to bring (power brick, external drive, password notes).

Depending on the problem, virus and malware cleanup can be same-day, sometimes in a few hours. It is not always same-day if the shop is queued. Hardware failures and deep recovery take longer. We tell you what to expect when we see the machine.

Common questions

Can DriveTech remove a virus in NYC without deleting my files?

We clean the infection and browser hijackers first and leave personal files alone when we can. We diagnose first at 351 East 82nd Street on the Upper East Side, then tell you if anything (ransomware damage, corruption, or a failing drive) needs data recovery instead of a wipe.

Do Macs get viruses, and do you clean Macs?

Macs less often get classic Windows viruses, but they do get adware, browser hijackers, and unwanted profiles. DriveTech cleans both Mac and Windows systems for walk-in customers in Manhattan.

How do I know I need professional virus removal instead of a free scan?

Try a reputable scan if the PC is only mildly slow. Come in for constant pop-ups or redirects, disabled security tools, a ransom message, stolen-account signs, or a machine too unstable to scan. Skip banking and passwords on that machine until it is checked.

Do you remove spyware, adware, and browser hijackers?

Yes. Those are common walk-in jobs alongside classic virus removal when diagnosis shows that is the problem.

What if it is ransomware?

We triage honestly. Some cases decrypt; many do not. We focus on containing the damage, protecting other devices, and recovering what we can. When files matter more than the OS, see data recovery.

What if it is not malware?

Then we say so. Failing drives, overheating, and bad updates go to same-day computer repair or recovery.

How long does virus removal take?

Sometimes same-day, sometimes a few hours, depending on the problem. Not always — the queue matters. Stubborn infections, ransomware, and hardware mimics take longer. You get a time estimate after we see the computer.

Can I walk in, or do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome. Call 212-249-4091 if the PC will not boot, you suspect ransomware, or you want to confirm someone can take it today.

Will you upsell me a new computer?

We recommend a new machine when the old one is not worth repairing. That is a diagnosis outcome, not the opening pitch on a virus page.
